The image of the crumbling church is particularly poignant as the keystone of the arch is slipping. The sheltering roof is gone and the congregation has “split” like the enclosure wall. Christian metaphors abound: Christ is referred to as the “keystone” in the New Testament; Christ said “Destroy this temple and I will raise it up in three days,” referring to the “temple of his body” as compared to the actual Temple of Jerusalem and pointing out the relative importance of the two; and this church is dedicated to Our Lady of Guadalupe, one of the most revered images of the Virgin Mary in Mexican faith and a symbol of (among many things) social justice.
Does the crumbling of the church presage social justice in a world divided? Or perhaps, the divided world is exemplified by the slipping keystone? What draws the two worlds together again?
I love the light in the empty room. I wonder if they loved it at that time of day, too. Any creature spending the night inside these days would probably be long gone, finding food and a drink, by the time this warmth reflected on the walls.
